I've been noticing lamps lately being much more edgy, not so basic! I dig it. Especially all of the ceramic animal ones from Jonathan Adler, and the Glamorized Antique ones on 1stdibs. I just re-read Kelly Wearstler's book, "Domicilium Decoratus: Hillcrest Estate, Beverly Hills, California" and think that these Elephant Lamps (http://www.1stdibs.com/) would be amazzzing in her home! Her living room is so glam and forward. She definitely knows how to layer.
Whimsy is important. With life being dramatic and serious - your home should be your oasis and should be filled with laughter. If that be an enormous Giraffe lamp from Jonathan Adler - then by all means! Go for it. I love how humor is becoming a major design element.
Great blog, you can find some more contemporary table lamps here.
